                                                   Abstract:

Modern categories of spectra are strictly symmetric monoidal and their commutative monoids are equivalent to E-infinity ring spectra. These in turn have symmetric monoidal categories of modules which are model categories leading to new versions of homotopy theory. I will focus on two examples, the connective real K-theory spectrum kO and the connective topological modular forms spectrum tmf. The analogues of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra for their module categories are the finite subHopf algebras A(1) and A(2) of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra and I will discuss examples of modules over these which arise (or don’t arise) as cohomology of such modules.
