The Betti cohomology of a complex algebraic variety depends only on the underlying topological space but carries a Hodge structure which is very subtle information
depending on the complex structure (hence varying with parameters). Interpreting this information is the goal of the Hodge conjecture and its generalization by Grothendieck.
According to Bloch-Beilinson’s conjectures, the complexity or size of the Hodge structures (measured by the Hodge coniveau) should reflect the size of the Chow groups (a universal purely algebraic cohomology theory built only from algebraic data). I will discuss the nature and the structure of these objects and the interplay between these various conjectures.
