Colloquium: Tuesday, April 12, 2 pm. Speaker: Orr Shalit (Technion) . Title: “Dilation of matrices and applications”.

Given two matrices of different sizes, A of size m x m and B of size n x n (with m<n), we say that B is a dilation of A, if A is the upper left m x m corner of B (a similar definition holds for families of matrices or operators). Could such a simple notion be of any use? It turns out that dilations are a very useful tool in matrix theory and operator theory.
