Topic: Higher structure in unstable homotopy groups

Place:    Room 614 in the Science & Education Building

Time:   10:00

Date:  Thursday, November 14, 2019

                                                   Abstract:

The homotopy groups of spheres have been a central topic of interest in homotopy theory since the 1940’s, but our knowledge of them is quite limited.

The over-all structure of the primary operations is known by Hilton’s Theorem from 1955, showing that they may be expressed in terms of the group operation,

Whitehead products, and compositions, but otherwise few global results are known.

In this talk we explore the higher structure on the unstable homotopy groups, taking the form of certain simplicial higher order operations,

using a version of the Bousfield-Friedlander spectral sequence of a simplicial space.  We shall show how all operations can be recovered, in principle, from

the Whitehead products, and provide a sample computation if time permits.
