Abstract:
In his thesis Joel Cohen showed how the stable homotopy groups of spheres are generated under composition and higher homotopy operations by a few “atomic” elements. We shall show that a similar result holds unstably. For this purpose we will define (unstable) longer Toda brackets, and explain how this notion must be modified to yield the desired result.
