Colloquium

The weekly colloquium features a talk by an invited speaker. Topics vary and include all areas of mathematics.

Unless otherwise noted, the colloquium takes place on Tuesdays, 14:00 in room 614, 6’th floor of the Science and Education Building. For further details, please contact the colloquium coordinator, Dr. Adam Dor-On.

Colloquium: Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Speaker: Ohad Feldheim (Hebrew University). Title: “Lattice models of magnetism: from magnets to antiferromagnets”.

Place: Room 614 in the Education & Sciences Building Time: 14:00 Abstract: The Ising model, and its generalisation, the Potts model, are two classical graph-colouring models for magnetism and antiferromagnetism. Albeit their simple formulation, these models were instrumental in explaining many…

Colloquium: Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Speaker: Karim Adiprasito (Hebrew University). Title: “From Hall’s marriage theorem to algebraic geometry (and back to combinatorics)”.

We discuss how something remarkably similar to Hall’s marriage theorem appears naturally in context of a conjecture of Grothendieck in algebraic geometry, and how this is useful to prove some long-standing problems in discrete geometry. For instance, I will prove…
