Abstract
Dispersal-induced growth (DIG) is a phenomenon discovered by theoretical ecologists, and also experimentally confirmed. It occurs when several populations with time-varying growth rates, each of which, when isolated, would become extinct, are able to persist and grow, when dispersal among the two populations is present. The talk will present a mathematical study of DIG, in the context of a deterministic model with periodic variation of growth rates. Using methods of the theory of differential equations, it is shown that DIG is a generic phenomenon, and the factors which are important in generating this effect are characterized
