Title: The number of closed ideals in the algebra of bounded operators on

Lebesgue spaces.

Abstract: I intend to review what is known about the closed ideals in the Banach algebras of bounded linear operators on . Then concentrate on two results: The first with Bill Johnson and Gilles Pisier is the existence of a continuum of closed ideals in . The second, with Bill Johnson, shows that for $1<p\not= 2<\infty$ there are exactly $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ different closed ideals in .
