Examples are branching<br \/>\nrandom walks, the two dimensional Gaussian free \ffield, cover time of the torus, and certain spin<br \/>\nglasses. The common theme in studying those are re\frefinements of the second moment method.<br \/>\nI will describe this approach through examples.
