If we replace thecomplex numbers C by the division algebra of quaternions H in the definition of Hermitiansymmetric spaces, we obtain the class of quaternion-K\u00e4hler symmetric spaces. While thesespaces emerge in an analogous way, we show that there is no quaternionic analogue ofHarish-Chandra\u2019s embedding theorem: A quaternion-K\u00e4hler symmetric space is integrableif and only if it is of rank 1.
